They Called Us Enemy

Description of They Called Us Enemy

Amazon.com Review Made famous via his role as Sulu in Star Trek, George Takei became a cultural phenomenon in the real world through his civil rights engagement and his support for democracy. Now, in his graphic memoir, They Called Us Enemy, Takei reveals the story of his familys incarceration during the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. A United States citizenas was everyone in his family except his father, who had been living in the U.S. for decadesTakei was only 5 years old when the government forced his family to leave their home and possessions and move to a concentration camp along with hundreds of others. Takei pivots between showing through his childs eyes the years in internment with expressing his later, more-adult understanding of how deeply his parents suffered during and after their imprisonment. Just as emotionally staggering is how Takeis father maintained his faith in the democratic system while the larger government failed him. The straightforward illustrations make this graphic memoir a read comfortable for all ages, even as the memories depicted range from unsettling to infuriating. It would be easy to consider Takeis story simply a colorful glimpse of the misbegotten past. But its power, like John Lewis March trilogy, burns in how it persuades the reader to consider how much weve really changed since Franklin D. Roosevelt and Earl Warren decided to imprison families based on unsupported fears. They Called Us Enemy also inspires readers to engage through democracy to insist that we treat fellow human beings with fairness and dignity. Adrian Liang, Amazon Book Review Read more Review Winner of the 2020 Asian/Pacific American Award for Young Adult Literature!'They Called Us Enemyis truly beautiful moving, thoughtful, important, engaging, and stunningly rendered. Corduroy

Description for Corduroy

Review Corduroy has donated more than three million dollars to a charity helping children with severe illnesses, disabilities, or traumas. Corduroy hosted Jumpstarts Read for the Record campaign, which raised more than $1.5 million for early education programs. Two million children and adults read the book on the same day. Corduroy was one of the first books inducted into the Indies Choice Book Awards Picture Book Hall of Fame. The New York Public Library named Corduroy one of the 100 Great Children's Books from the Last 100 Years. The National Education Association named Corduroy one of the Teachers Top 100 Books for Children. School Library Journal named Corduroy one of the Top 100 Picture Books for the 21st Century. Corduroys creator, Don Freeman, received the Kerlan Award in recognition of his singular attainments in the creation of children's literature. Close to 20 million copies of the Corduroy books have sold in the United States and around the world. Read more About the Author Don Freeman was born in San Diego, California, in 1908. At an early age, he received a trumpet as a gift from his father. He practiced obsessively and eventually joined a California dance band. After graduating from high school, he ventured to New York City to study art under the tutelage of Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students' League. He managed to support himself throughout his schooling by playing his trumpet evenings, in nightclubs and at weddings. Gradually, he eased into making a living sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. This shift was helped along, in no small part, by a rather heartbreaking incident: he lost his trumpet. One evening, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway, he simply forgot it was sitting on the seat beside him. This new career turned out to be a near-perfect fit for Don, though, as he had always loved the theater. He was introduced to the world of childrens literature when William Saroyan asked him to illustrate several books. Soon after, he began to write and illustrate his own books, a career he settled into comfortably and happily. Through his writing, he was able to create his own theater: 'I love the flow of turning the pages, the suspense of what's next. Ideas just come at me and after me. It's all so natural. I work all the time, long into the night, and it's such a pleasure. I don't know when the time ends. I've never been happier in my life!' Don died in 1978, after a long and successful career. He created many beloved characters in his lifetime, perhaps the most beloved among them a stuffed, overall-wearing bear named Corduroy. Don Freeman was the author and illustrator of many popular books for children, including Corduroy, A Pocket for Corduroy, and the Caldecott Honor Book Fly High, Fly Low. Read more

The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming

Description of The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming

Amazon.com Review The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming is a spiritual adventure story. A chance encounter with a poster depicting a detail of Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son set in motion a chain of events that enabled Nouwen to redefine and claim his vocation late in his life. In this book, which interweaves elements of art history, memoir, Midrash, and self-help, Nouwen brings the parable to life with empathic analyses of each character. Nouwen's absorption in the story (and the painting) is so complete that the father's challenge to love the son, and the son's challenge to receive that love, become Nouwen's own. And Nouwen's writing is so clear and his tone is so appealingly frank and humble that readers--no matter how far from home--will find hope for themselves in the prodigal peace Nouwen ultimately achieves. --Michael Joseph Gross Read more Review 'The Return of the Prodigal Sonis a beautiful book, as beautiful in the simple clarity of its wisdom as in the terrible beauty of the transformation to which it calls us.New Oxford Review Read more From the Publisher The beloved spiritual writer meditates on the parable of the prodigal son's return -- a powerful drama of fatherhood, filial duty, rivalry, and anger between brothers -- and its enduring lessons for Christianity. From anxiety check-ins to coloring to concrete suggestions for soothers that actually really and truly work, just seeing this book on my desk every morning makes me breathe easier. It should be required reading for everyone I know.Caroline Leavitt,New York Timesbestselling author (and anxious person) ofIs This TomorrowandPictures of You'I laughed out loud at every page. Now I feel better about flying in a plane, being trapped in an Uber without cell service, and all the diseases I probably don't have. I want to give this to everyone I know in my Jordan Catalano generation.'Liz Teich, The New York StylistThe Big Activity Book for Anxious Peoplegets me out from under my weighted blanket. If I had friends, I would definitely give them this book!Ellie Knaus, host of Atomic Moms'Frickin' hysterical! Who knew my anxiety could be so funny?Amy Morrison, founder ofPregnant ChickenAnxiety loves company. Or, at least, commiseration. This brilliant, hilarious book of fun will keep you giggling and scribbling your worries away. Since receiving it, I've been too busy to do an in depth internet search, but I hear it's scientifically proven to be just as effective at alleviating self-torment as a heavy blanket, dose of CBD oil, or therapy session. My cuticles, hairline, and digestive system salute Reid and Williams!Phoebe Lapine, author of The Wellness Project 'What I love about this guide is a) it gives you something to actually do, other than sit with your angsty thoughts, b) it's funny, not earnestthey poke fun at the clich of being told 'just breathing' will fix everythingand c) it's subversive and offbeat. As someone with OCD, I personally related to the word scramble on the germiest spots in your hotel room. This book validates real fears while providing solutions that are both helpful and actually enjoyable.'Amy Keller Laird, former editor-in-chief ofWomen's Health; founder @club_mental 'A valuable tool for any sufferers who are looking for distraction, compassion, and real, viable solutions to our most common anxiety triggers. Therapeutic techniques are shared by way of thoughtful (and fun!) activities, and between the layers of comedy, the authors are gifting readers with a palatable way to digest the reality of mental health issues. Andwith their skill, insight and creativitythey have even managed to make it delicious.'Rebecca Fox Starr, mental health advocate, author ofBeyond the Baby Blues: Anxiety and Depression During and After PregnancyComedy might be one of the best instant remedies for anxiety, and The Big Activity Book for Anxious People brings plenty of it. Beyond making us laugh, Reid and Williams remind us anxious people of one powerful thing: were definitely not alone in this.Lauren Sweeney, content director, HEYMAMA'What can I say? This is one of the best books about anxiety. I meticulouslyread it from front to back exactly one-hundred and thirteen times so that nothing bad would ever happen to my family!'Wendy Molyneux, writer and producer, Bob's Burgers'My insouciant inner child was delighted; my anxious outer adult was soothed. And my usually-mangled cuticles would like to personally thank page 89.'Katlyn Carlson'This book is exactly what it says it is: a big activity book for anxious people! Its got some great activities inside that totally keep me busy, keep my anxiety in check, and truly is a great time suck to keep my mind focused on the activities and an escape from whatever is consuming me those days. Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe

Description of Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe

NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLERA renowned psychic medium teaches us how to recognize and interpret the life-changing messages from loved ones and spirit guides on the Other Side.Laura Lynne Jackson is a psychic medium and the author of the New York Times best seller The Light Between Us. She possesses an incredible gift: the ability to communicate with loved ones who have passed, convey messages of love and healing, and impart a greater understanding of our interconnectedness. Though her abilities are exceptional, they are not unique, and that is the message at the core of this book. Understanding "the secret language of the universe" is a gift available to all. As we learn to ask for and recognize signs from the other side, we will start to find meaning where before there was only confusion, and see light in the darkness. We may decide to change paths, push toward love, pursue joy, and engage with life in a whole new way.In Signs, Jackson is able to bring the mystical into the everyday. She relates stories of people who have experienced uncanny revelations and instances of unexplained synchronicity, as well as others drawn from her own experience. There's the lost child who appears to his mother as a deer that approaches her unhesitatingly at a highway rest stop; the name written on a dollar bill that lets a terrified wife know that her husband will be okay; the Elvis Presley song that arrives at the exact moment of Jackson's own father's passing; and many others. This is a book that is inspiring and practical, deeply comforting and wonderfully motivational, in asking us to see beyond ourselves to a more magnificent universal design.Praise for Signs"This stirring guide...asserts that anyone can learn to understand messages that are sent from the 'Other Side'.... For readers struggling with loss who believe it's possible to communicate with the deceased, this book will console and empower them to look beyond their suffering." (Publishers Weekly)"This brilliant book by the renowned psychic medium Laura Lynne Jackson is a guidebook to and translator of the mysterious spiritual language of the universe. Through a series of touching personal stories, Signs teaches us how to discern and understand the myriad spiritual signs in our lives. Laura Lynne's beautiful and compassionate heart shines through every page. This book is both excellent and important, and I highly recommend it to all." (Brian L. Weiss, MD, author of Many Lives, Many Masters)
